Jeddah’s iconic bicycle, which was recently uprooted from the roundabout on which it stood for a good 30 years to make way for a new bridge, will be relocated.

The bicycle has been placed on the sidelines of the construction site while authorities decide what to do with it.

The popular Jeddah landmark will either be placed east of the newly developed bridge on the same road or at an entirely new location.

“The bicycle is a major Jeddah landmark, which is why the municipality is trying to keep it near where it was originally located,” said one official, who requested anonymity.

The 15-meter-high bicycle, which is believed by some to have made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, has been around since 1982.

It was a made by Spanish artist Julio Lafuente, who had constructed it from scrap metal that came from an old marble factory owned by Mohammed Binladin.

The bridge between the King Fahd and Rawdah street intersection is being constructed in its place to ease traffic congestion.

The north-south overpass will have three traffic lanes going in each direction with service roads and ramps.
