Overqualified Saudis
By : ABDULLAH SAYEL
Out of 3,445 vacancies in government jobs, 1,010 jobs remain vacant for an astonishing reason. What we need to know now is that 2,210 male candidates and 225 female candidates were found suitable for 2,435 vacancies. These jobs belong to the Ministry of Civil Service.
Those who wish to know the reason, why 1,010 jobs remain vacant; it is because many Saudi candidates were found overqualified! Those who read this tiny column may remember the question I raised two years ago. The question was: How ready are we to absorb the massive number of highly educated graduates, especially those who return from scholarships in the US, Canada, Europe and even Japan?
Undoubtedly, overqualified Saudis will double by 2015, with the return of more Saudis holding MA and Ph.D. degrees. Relatively, it is almost impossible to seek the support of Labor Ministry while it is overwhelmed with the attempt to employ more than 400,000 Saudi women in the private sector. The government, again, is facing a new national mission that should end with critically tangible solutions.
