Jazan floods claim 3 lives
Civil Defense teams in Jazan fished out a body of a flood victim from Wadi Bin Abdullah near the southern border bringing the total number of fatalities to three, all of them children.
The other two children had died by drowning in the swamps left by the Damad and Al-Maswim floods.
Capt. Yahya Al-Qahtani, the Civil Defense spokesman, said the operations room in the governorate received a call regarding a 13-year old boy who had fallen into a pond left by the Wadi Damad floods. His body was recovered by citizens before the Civil Defense reached the location.
Al-Qahtani added that the operations room received another call concerning a two-year old girl who fell into another swamp next to Kadaf Al-Hadaba of Al-Mawsim center. The girl died soon after.
Civil defense teams succeeded in rescuing people trapped in houses in various areas including 25 people trapped in Al-Hatheera village which is affiliated with Al-Mawsim center.
The heavy rains in the region caused flashfloods which damaged some houses, roads and other infrastructure as the water rushed through the valleys and creeks. Authorities were on full alert to manage and implement emergency plans to cope with the rains and floods and to maintain the safety of citizens and residents. They disposed of huge amounts of water, opened up the roads and restored electricity and communication lines to the affected areas.
Al-Qahtani called on residents and citizens to take precautionary measures to guard against rains and floods, which might endanger their lives. He also advised parents to keep an eye on their children and prevent them from venturing close to pools, ponds or swamps to avoid accidents.
