King: Help Egypt end crisis
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah on Tuesday congratulated new Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sissi for his “historic” election victory and called for a donor conference to help Egypt through its economic crisis.
King Abdullah, who is vacationing in the Moroccan city of Casablanca, expressed confidence that El-Sissi’s rule would open a new era of peace and stability in Egypt.
“To the brothers and friends of Egypt … I invite everyone to a donors’ conference … to help the country overcome its economic crisis,” the king said in a cable to the Egyptian president. King Abdullah urged countries around the world not to interfere in Egypt’s internal affairs.
“Causing any harm to Egypt is tantamount to harming Islam, Arabs and Saudi Arabia. This is a principle we are not prepared to bargain over,” the cable said.
He praised the new government for gaining the support of Egyptians. “On this historic win, we congratulate you for the confidence you have won from the people of Egypt, who have pinned their hopes and aspirations on you for a better future,” the king said.
King Abdullah said the Egyptian people have been suffering from the chaos and confusion that outside forces brought to the country. He said firm steps should be taken to stop those trying to undermine the country’s security and stability.
“A country or nation that fails to stop those who work for its disunity will not be able to protect its honor and prestige,” the king said.
The Saudi leader urged all Egyptians to stand united and act with responsibility and vigilance. “They have to bear the present difficulties and problems to support the new president,” he said. “I am sure Egyptians are capable of overcoming all difficulties and obstacles.”
King Abdullah said he was confident that Egypt would achieve great progress and become the envy of the world. He advised the new president to confront falsehood with justice and truth. “You should have an open mind to accept the views of others and start a national dialogue with all groups whose hands have not been tainted by the blood of innocent people,” the king said.
