A plume of smoke rises from the area hit by a fire at Saudi Aramco’s Berri Gas Plant in Jubail.

A fire broke out at Saudi Aramco’s Berri Gas Plant in Jubail Industrial City on Monday. Firefighting teams put out the blaze within two hours.

There were no casualties and the gas supply to the power and water plants would be unaffected by the incident which took place at 8:30 a.m., according to an Aramco statement.

“The Berri Gas Plant is temporarily closed as a precautionary measure but will resume its services soon and we will coordinate with the customers associated with the plant’s production to meet their needs,” the company said.

Berri was originally designed as a gas collection and compression center to process trapped gas from the Berri oil field, but it has since become one of the centerpieces of Aramco’s Master Gas System.

According to the company, Berri was among one of the first five major gas treatment plants to be completed. Later, an ethane storage plant was built at Berri to store the 350,000 barrels of ethane needed to maintain a steady supply to the Jubail Industrial Complex.

Berri now also processes gas from the Qatif field. The gas plant’s facilities underwent a major expansion to include three new gas-oil separation plants, five new and 10 upgraded offshore platforms, 34 drilling islands, and a 140-megawatt cogeneration plant, providing steam heat for oil dehydration and power for offshore electric submersible pumps.
