Ignoring caution signs at beaches may lead to disasters, warned Coast Guard officials on Saturday.

The Coast Guard patrol rescued more than 10 people along Jeddah’s North Obhur coast. Most of the rescued were young men who ignored safety signs.

Naji Mansour Al-Juhani, Coast Guard media spokesman, called upon holiday-makers to be cautious around turbulent areas in the Red Sea.

“Some areas are very deep and can lead to drowning,” he said. “People should pay heed to safety procedures and refrain from swimming in banned zones.”

The Coast Guard has published brochures and manuals to increase awareness about the dangerous spots in the sea. These flyers will be distributed among hikers and sea lovers.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard has chalked out meticulous plans and preparations to host tourists.

Maj. Gen. Bader Al-Jabri, chief of the Coast Guard in the Makkah region, said officers would be deployed round-the-clock to keep an eye on the tourists in distress and to give them proper directions. The Coast Guard will also supply marine centers along the coastal strip with trained cadres and well-equipped vehicles, boats and hovercraft.
Rescue-and-search teams will also be stationed to help in drowning emergencies alongside the ones stationed at the picnic and diving areas.

Such a plan was highly needed as more tourists and visitors are expected this year. The summer vacation coincides with the holy month of Ramadan.
