A number of motorists in Jeddah have expressed resentment at the increasing number of defective traffic lights in the city and demanded the Jeddah Traffic Department to pay urgent attention to the repairs of the faulty systems.

The malfunctioning of the traffic lights at major intersections in the city gives rise to traffic jams and congestions and leaves motorists at high risk of traffic accidents.
Abdulrahman Salqooie of Al-Haramain neighborhood told Arab News that he had spotted a number of traffic signals in his area which were out of order.

“This is causing so much confusion and congestions at the intersections. I have been in danger of causing a traffic accident more than once and sometimes I am late for work which puts me in an awkward position with my boss,” he said adding that he had even got notices for such delays.

He said that he had reported to the Jeddah Traffic Department but in vain.
Another motorist, Abdullah Tanker, who is a resident of Al-Muntazahat neighborhood in Jeddah said: “Many traffic signals on the main roads and the side streets in Jeddah have been out of order for a long time. It is very annoying because of the traffic congestions on the one hand and being late to reach one’s destination on the other.”

He said that he had personally visited the Jeddah Traffic Department to report the faulty traffic signals. “They promised to get them fixed, but nothing has happened yet,” he asserted.

He appealed to the Jeddah Traffic Department to get the traffic lights repaired before the holy month of Ramadan when traffic jams normally increase.

Meanwhile, Zaid Al-Hamzi official spokesman for the Jeddah Traffic Department told Arab News that his department is in the process of conducting a comprehensive survey to count the number of defective traffic signals in the city and repair them soon noting that the malfunction is mainly in the operating systems of the traffic lights.
