An error by a consultant working on the multibillion-riyal Haramain train project has led to work stoppage in the northern part of the city, local media reported here recently.

The mistake has seen a main commercial road leading to the Hamadaniyah, Falah, Azizia, Shafa and other neighborhoods narrowed from 32 to 16 meters.

The Jeddah Municipality reportedly stopped the work on the project in the districts after residents filed a complaint. They said the contractor had installed pillars in the middle of the road. They reportedly claimed they have official documents showing that the street should be 32 meters wide.

Jeddah Mayor Hani Abu Ras reportedly ordered the general manager of the Haramain project to stop work in the area, and for the pillars to be removed.

The municipality found that the consultant did not refer to the project’s plans when he decided to narrow the road. Sources reportedly said the consultant is the same person who designed the Haramain project for the Transport Ministry.

The report named several residents who had filed complaints about the road including Abdulla Al-Harbi, Hamdi Al-Shatri, Fahd Al-Mutairi, Naif Al-Mutairi, Abdullah Al-Sharif and Nasser Al-Juhani.

“We have in our possession official deeds and plans that confirm the width of the road is 32 meters. The company installed pillars in the middle of the road without considering the plans. We complained to the mayor and want the road restored to its previous condition,” a resident said.
