The traffic police in Makkah are now using special handheld devices that can issue tickets instantly and inform violators via SMS that they have broken the law.

Ali Al-Zahrani of the Makkah traffic department told Arab News on Thursday that the devices are linked to the department’s command and control center and has various functions including a plate recognition system.

The device also tells violators how much they would have to pay. The tickets are printed out and pasted on the driver’s window.

In the event of an accident, the device informs drivers what processes they should follow.
Drivers in Makkah are known for parking and other violations. Al-Zahrani said Makkah police issued 120,936 fines in June.

The handheld devices and recently introduced cameras are part of the Kingdom’s automated traffic control and management system, which covers major cities. The system is linked to the National Information Center of the Interior Ministry.
