Two wanted fugitives who had escaped from a Yemeni-Saudi border post in the southern province of Sharura on Friday after opening fire at a military patrol, killing four Saudi security, blew themselves up early Saturday.

The duo had taken shelter in a government building after fleeing the scene in a stolen patrol vehicle.

“A jeep with a Gulf license plate and six passengers inside approached the border crossing point and opened fire at security patrols as locals headed for Friday prayers,” said Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, Interior Ministry spokesman.

“The head of the unit was killed on the spot, while two of the attackers stole his patrol vehicle and began driving toward Sharura while being chased by security forces, who eventually crashed into the other car, killing three of the passengers and injuring a fourth. “A security guard was also killed in the chase,” said Al-Turki.

The duo had killed a security guard on their way into the building.

“Security forces immediately surrounded the building and evacuated the people inside,” he said. “The men were confined to the upper floor and were urged to surrender.”

The two fugitives then detonated the explosive belts they were wearing. The four slain security men, who were all fasting are: Fahad Al-Dosari, Mohammed Al-Briki, Saeed Hadi Mohammed Al-Qahtani and Saeed Bin Ali Hussein Al-Qahtani.

Nine other security men were also injured in the incident, but have been discharged.

Al-Turki confirmed that the attackers were found to be in possession of 14 hand grenades, 11 Molotov bombs, four machine guns, 26 bullets for machine guns, 26 rounds of ammunition and 1,549 bullets for automatic weapons.
