Asir doctors perform complex leg surgery
A medical team at Asir general hospital successfully performed a leg-lengthening surgery.
The team was headed by Dr. Ayed Al-Shahrani, an orthopedic surgeon. Doctors Marouf Ibrahim Zaki Alhfeza, Saleh Al-Ghamdi, and Thamer Yazidi, were able to perform surgery on a Yemeni patient who suffered a severe injury with loss of bones in the right leg and the inability to heal and walk.
The patient was treated in Yemen and had four operation with no success. At Asir general hospital, an operation was performed to readjust and extend the leg by 11 cm utilizing the same leg bone. The procedure was performed using the Lazorrov technique with gradual adjustment whereby the foot returned to its normal condition. This was confirmed by the official spokesman for Asir’s Health Department, Saeed Al-Nafeer, indicating that the operation was conducted in two phases.
Al-Shahrani pointed out that this operation is seldom performed and is only done in very limited areas of the Kingdom where the Department of Orthopedics surgery has received support from General Director of Health Affairs Ibrahim Alhfeza and General Supervisor Abdullah Al Oda in the unit of adjustment and elongation surgery with all the needs for such complex cases, compound fractures, and the deformities of children’s extremities.
These cases cannot be treated by conventional methods. The number of cases has exceeded 120 with a high success rate.
