Civil Defense forces doused a huge fire that broke out in a paper factory in south Jeddah on Monday.

Several fire-fighting and rescue teams combated the blaze with the help of helicopters, which guided ground teams.

Nearby warehouses filled with grass for animal feed, coupled with high temperatures and strong winds, added to the challenge of dousing the flames.

“Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the factory, which contains a huge warehouse stocked with paper pallets,” said Col. Saeed Sarhan, Makkah’s Civil Defense spokesman, on Monday.

“We dispatched 35 firemen to douse the flames in addition to public security helicopters,” he said.
“Civil Defense forces struggled to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby warehouses.”

He added: “The fact that the paper warehouse spans a vast area of 6,000 square meters only hampered our efforts to move heavy equipment and water supplies inside the plant, which is why helicopters had to guide teams in.”
