Syrian President Bashar al-Assad reappointed Wael al-Halaki as the country’s prime minister on Sunday and asked him to form a cabinet, Reuters news agency reported on Sunday.

Assad was sworn in for a new term as president last month, requiring him to form a new government. Halaki’s reappointment is the first step in the process.

Al-Halaqi was first appointed prime minister in 2012 after his predecessor, Riad Hijab, fled the country to join the opposition.
