Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives (ALJCI), the corporate social responsibility arm of ALJ Group, organized an educational trip for 20 orphan boys to Malaysia as part of its Tanweer cultural and recreational program this year.

Two advisers from the Ministry of Social Affairs, as well as an educational adviser provided by ALJCI, accompanied the children when they visited educational, scientific and cultural attractions in various Malaysian cities.

Participants from all over the Kingdom gathered in Jeddah, the departure point to Kuala Lumpur. After exploring the Malaysian capital, the group traveled to Genting, Selangor and Penang, all admired for their cultural, industrial, scientific and educational advancements.

“Officials at the Ministry of Social Affairs select the trip participants according to their academic performance, making the trip a reward for excelling in their studies,” said Abdalla Taleb, manager of health and social programs at ALJCI. “The students participating in the nine-day journey are aged between 14 and 18 years,” he added.

Tanweer offers modern educational concepts, such as sports training, cognitive programs to develop mental processes through exploration, innovation and the development of thought and the teaching of social skills to effectively communicate with others while forming one’s own personality.

Another course teaches emotional skills, such as how to get motivated, accept failure, as well as self-expression, whilst another program helps to gain skills in accuracy, perfection and troubleshooting. All these programs are taught using games linking education with entertainment.

Thanks to the cooperation between ALJCI and the ministry, these orphans could benefit from experiencing the programs linked to cultural and scientific developments in Malaysia, Taleb pointed out.

“ALJCI and the Ministry of Social Affairs are actively contributing to the education of these youngsters, enhancing their cultural and scientific perceptions and thus enabling them to fully engage in society,” he added.

The program has been running for seven years now. Past trips included visits to European countries, such as France, as well as Turkey and other Islamic and Arab countries.

“As we look into the future, our aim, together with the Ministry of Social Affairs, is to develop this program further to serve more orphaned children,” Taleb said.
