The ministers of the GCC discussed building a common front against ISIS.

Foreign ministers from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) convened in Jeddah on Saturday to discuss the regional threat posed by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The ministers of the GCC, an alliance between Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, discussed building a common front against ISIS.

The meeting has been described as having “special importance” and was expected to discuss “a number of issues related to the path of joint GCC action,” Kuwait’s al-Watan newspaper reported.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal has over the past week been at the center of diplomatic efforts to stand up to the challenge posed by ISIS to the status quo.

He and his counterparts from Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates held talks last week on Syria and “the rise of terrorist extremist ideology,” according to an official statement.

They agreed on “the need to seriously work to deal with these crises and challenges to preserve security and stability in Arab countries,” the statement added.
