A team of policewomen in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi now console female drivers in severe accidents and may even delay the investigation to a later time, local newspaper Gulf News reported on Saturday.

The initiative, launched last month, tasks a squad of eight policewomen to investigate traffic accidents involving women.

The program was set up to “inspire confidence and a sense of security” to women involved in accidents in order to “create the appropriate environment” to take a statement from them, according to a statement released by the ministry.

So far, the female police team – which is sent to the scene based on the severity of the accident and the injuries caused – has dealt with 69 incidents since the beginning of the year in Abu Dhabi.

According to Gulf News, reactions to the program are mixed, with some calling it “discriminatory.”

“People get into accidents all the time. Yes, some crashes are bigger than others but I think everyone deserves to be comforted, whether male or female,” said one resident.

“It is understandable on some level that some might find it more comforting to have someone of authority from the same gender be present at the scene of an accident but in general I don’t see the need to take these extra precautions,” said another.
