Municipalities are warning citizens against unauthorized slaughterhouses for Eid-Al-Adha with expats from various professions adopting the profession of butchers temporarily for some extra cash.

Some expats have already begun preparing slaughterhouses. These private arrangements are gaining currency owing to the congested and very busy government-run slaughterhouses.

“Expats take advantage of the rush in the slaughterhouses of the Jeddah mayoralty to form their own private enterprises for the sacrificial season,” Naif Al-Zahrani told Arab News. Moreover, these government-owned slaughterhouses are charging higher prices and are located on the outskirts of the cities, he added.

However, the unauthorized butcheries don’t follow health regulations posing a major risk to consumers. Prices of slaughtering sheep have skyrocketed to SR150 per sheep on the first day of Eid but will gradually decrease starting from the second day of the feast.

Eid Al-Aslani said the expats are not authorized to perform slaughtering and lack the proper experience, adding that the authorities’ failure to control the market gives way to inexperienced people handling the sacrifice leading to chaos. He warned of the spread of epidemics because of these malpractices.
