The deputy speaker of the Shoura Council, Mohamed bin Amin Al-Jafri, said that Saudi Arabia had forewarned the world of the danger of terrorism.

Addressing the 131st session of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, Al-Jafri said the Kingdom has repeatedly called on the international community to bear responsibility for the birth and spread of terrorism.

He said Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah had earlier called for an international conference and the establishment of an international center under the umbrella of the United Nations to fight terrorism and also donated $100 million for the establishment of the center.

He stressed the need to cope with changes in the international arena in light of the stormy political and security developments which contributed to the emergence and spread of extremist forces in the Middle East in a manner that poses a threat to international peace and security.

“This plague (terror) is not subject to geographical limits which necessitates fruitful and constructive cooperation from the international community and its organizations to fight it,” he said, adding that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is keen to adhere to its values and true Islamic principles based on tolerance, brotherhood and justice and calls for dialogue and renouncing extremism, violence and terror.

On the Palestinian issue, he renewed the Kingdom’s call for siding with truth and justice for the Palestinian people and to stand against the Israeli brutality including the unjust siege of the Gaza Strip.

He said the Kingdom has also expressed deep concern over the dangerous situation in Syria and continued bloodshed there as it creates a fertile environment for extremist forces to spread terror.

On developments in Yemen, the deputy Shoura speaker called on all parties concerned to fully apply all conditions of the peace deal there and urged the international community to provide all possible assistance to Yemen.

On Iraq, he said the Kingdom has welcomed the selection of the president, Parliament speaker and prime minister. He recalled that King Abdullah had allocated $500 million as a humanitarian gesture to cover the basic human needs of the Iraqi people.

On combating violence against women, he said the Kingdom has adopted a series of laws and systems that ensured protection for women against discrimination and violence with active participation from the Shoura Council members.
