The Eastern Province municipality has announced plans to use energy-saving illumination technologies (LED) in street lamps with a view to cut down electricity consumption.

The new technology will allow for controlled consumption of power through a system of computers and remote controls leading to more efficient means of saving energy.

Mayor of the Eastern region, Fahad bin Mohammed Al-Jubair, said: “The use of LEDs is one of the most prominent projects provided to the region to reduce electricity consumption by a system of computers and remote controls which will also monitor the contractor’s performance and achievements.” He added that the new technology will at the same time help to monitor the network and fix problems if and when they crop up.

This technology is expected to save 64 percent of the annual cost that currently exceeds more than SR1 billion.

The Eastern Province municipality has studied the rate of energy saving in a number of sites in the eastern province through the innovative technology. The rate of energy saving on King Saud Street in Dammam will be 17 percent, 21 percent in Al-Faisaliyah district and 24 percent in Dammam’s corniche area.

Meanwhile, the energy saving lamps known as (LED) will save 80 to 90 percent of the energy used for lighting. The ecologically friendly lamps do not contain chemicals or harmful gases and light up immediately.

“The municipality has started replacing the traditional lamps at Al-Etaslat district in Dammam with 500 LEDs and will gradually replace all the lamps at a rate of 15 percent annually starting from the next budget,” Al-Jubair said, adding that the technology will be applied with the new projects of the municipality.

Energy consumption in the Kingdom is reaching record highs with homes and street lights taking up the bulk of the energy consumed. It is hoped that modern and innovative energy saving technologies will curb the current trend.
