In two separate fire incidents on Friday, two girls aged six and nine died of smoke inhalation in the Kingdom.

In the first such incident, a six-year-old girl died when she was mistakenly left behind inside her room when rescuers helped other members of the house in Safa district, Jeddah. The girl and her three siblings, aged 3-5 years, were present in their apartment along with their mother when the fire broke out.

“After the fire began, the mother began screaming for help. Thankfully, a neighbor rushed to the ir help and broke down the door,” said Col. Saeed Sarhan, spokesperson of Civil Defense. “He rescued the mother and three children. After having realized that her another daughter was left inside the apartment, the mother ran inside to find the girl lying dead due to smoke inhalation and burn injuries.”

Those rescued daughters are being treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

Civil defense teams that rushed along with rescue and medical teams later confirmed the death of the girl. Col. Sarhan said Civil Defense doused the flames and inspected the whole building. They think welding machines on the roof of the building might be the cause of the fire. Authorities were informed about the incident and a criminal investigation was being initiated.

In another incident, a nine-year-old girl died in similar circumstances in Mubaraz, the Eastern Province on Friday morning.

The girl who lived with her family in her ground floor apartment in Rashadiya district died due to suffocation, according to the Civil Defense in the Eastern Province.
