Community service for some offenders OK’d

Ministry-of-Justice-

The Justice Ministry has issued directives for the country’s courts to sentence certain offenders to community service rather than jail, including cleaning the homes of the elderly, washing the dead, digging graves and working at rehabilitation centers.

According to sources quoted by local media recently, the directives of Justice Minister Mohammad Al-Issa comes in the wake of a study conducted by the Crime Combat Research Center on Disobedience to Parents, and the recommendations of a workshop held by the center.

Nasser Al-Oud, adviser to the minister and general supervisor of the social services department, said the ministry is working with the Ministries of Interior, Social Affairs, Health and Education to implement the alternative sanctions to imprisonment.
