Hayek’s struggle against domestic violence continues
CALIFORNIA: In addition to her passion for acting, Salma Hayek also raises awareness about domestic violence.
The 48-year-old star was a speaker at The Wrap Power Women’s Breakfast in Beverly Hills, California on Wednesday when she talked emotionally about her work on behalf of women in front of 150 Hollywood female executives.
On her philanthropic efforts, Salma urged others to join her to prevent domestic violence not just in the States, but also around the world.
’If you want to stop violence in the world it has to start in the home,’ she said. ‘If we can win this war, we can win the war against violence.’
Adding that she rather ‘live her activism instead of talk about it.’
As to the reason maybe some were not aware of Salma’s charitable platform, she argued that she didn’t want her status as a movie star to hinder the work of others.
’I was so passionate about it that to me it was a part of me that had nothing to do with being a celebrity.’
Further explaining: ‘Sometimes you do more awareness by being aware of yourself and living in the presence of this awareness than by talking until you die. I don’t come from a background of domestic violence, but I think it’s incredibly important.’
So important that she was able to persuade one of the most successful cosmetic lines, Avon, to donate their proceeds to the cause.
’I worked with them for ten years,’ she continued. ‘I still work with them even though we don’t have a contract.’
In the past, Avon was known for solely working with cancer research facilities to find a cure for the disease but because of Salma’s reaching out the company has raised over $90 million to help fight domestic violence.
