Celebs often hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. Living in the spotlight usually has its share of ups and downs. While the going is good, they look like they can pull off anything, even get out of unfortunate wrong doings. We frequently hear about celebrities behaving badly or even getting arrested. They do tempt controversies!

Last week’s buzz about Salman Khan not appearing in the court for the 14 year-old hit- and-run case adds to this theme. And why? Because he was busy with the wedding preparations of his little sister Arpita. Actors with criminal charges slapped against them — is certainly not a rare phenomenon in Bollywood. Right from the biggies like Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan down to the likes of Shiney Ahuja, it’s the same story.

Talking about the ‘Being Human’ hero, Khan is known in the industry for his frequent run-ins with the law. His successful Bollywood career is another matter altogether. The ogre ‘Trouble’ has stalked him, like forever. In September 2002 he was arrested for rash driving which caused the death of one person and injured three others. Though the charges were later dropped, it was not the end just there for the actor. Then in 2006, the charge against him was imprisonment — for killing a black buck during the shooting of his movie ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ in 1998. Salman was charged under the ‘Wildlife Protection Act’ by a Rajasthan Court and his co-actors Tabu, Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Bendre were also charged for lesser offenses. Salman Khan was sent to jail after being accused of poaching in 1998, and again in 2006, but he managed to obtain bail in both cases. Then for the third time, he was sent to jail in 2007.

There is the case of the on-screen ‘Khalnayak’ — Sanjay Dutt, who turned real life ‘Khalnayak’ after he was accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts that killed more than 250 people. Charges leveled against him included — illegal possession of arms used in the serial blasts. Incidentally, the arrest took place just three weeks before the release of his film ‘Khalnayak’ — in which he portrayed a hardened criminal. After that, the actor has been in and out of jail several times. Currently, Dutt is in jail, serving time.

Now, in the news is Shiney Ahuja — he is returning to films after over four years, with ‘Welcome Back’. He had the world at his feet, before his career came to an abrupt halt! Everyone thought Shiney Ahuja was the next ‘big thing’ in Bollywood, after he bagged the Filmfare Award for the Best Debut for his film ‘Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi’. But, fate had something else in store! in 2009 Shiney was accused of rape by his domestic help and was arrested in June 2009.

Actress Monica Bedi spent five years in lock-up — on charges of a passport forgery case and for being a counterpart in antisocial activities with Don Abu Salem.

Drugs have also been a case for bringing celebs under the black cloud. Fardeen Khan was caught red-handed by the police, while actually buying drugs, but he was granted bail after five days.

Such stories in Hollywood are dime a dozen. So, whether it’s Hollywood or Bollywood, stars end up in the limelight for all the wrong reasons! Some manage a narrow escape; some even get tossed behind the bars, some are still awaiting a verdict.

It’s devil’s luck that celebs have to grapple with, at times…
