Formula One fans cheered Britain’s Lewis Hamilton to victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton claimed his second Formula One world championship after he finished his 11th race of the season in the Emirati capital. He won his first title in 2008.

Germany’s Nico Rosberg started on pole but was passed by Hamilton as he suffered a series of mechanical problems to stand in 14th place.

Hamilton was crowned as the 2014 Formula One Champion at a ceremony that marked the end of a three-day spectacular experience that took off Thursday.

CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, where the event was set, hailed the winner and race-goers for an exceptional competition in Abu Dhabi.

“I would like to congratulate the new world champion after what has been one of the most thrilling finales to a Formula 1 season in recent years,” said Al Tareq Al Ameri in a press release.

“Fans were promised an exceptional, spectacular experience and we hope the weekend has lived up to the expectations. The largest crowds in the event’s short history have generated an incredible atmosphere around the whole circuit.

“For me, in my first year as CEO of Yas Marina Circuit, it’s been an honour to preside over such an extraordinary event, and a fitting end to the Formula One racing season.”

Race organizers expected that more than 125,000 local and international spectators were set to attend this year’s F1 event in Abu Dhabi.

It was announced on Saturday that Etihad Airways has extended its association as title sponsor of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
