Department store owner referred to court for defaming Egyptian flag
The owner of an Egyptian department store was referred to court Thursday for defaming the national flag, Egyptian media reported.
Sayed al-Suerky, who owns al-Tawhid wal Nour department store, was arrested for printing the Egyptian flag on shoe soles.
The verdict on Serky’s case will be convened on Jan. 12, Egypt Independent reported.
It is not the first time that such incidents have happened in Egypt.
In August, Egyptian belly dancer Safinaz was summoned by prosecutors for wearing a red, white and black costume depicting the colors of the Egyptian flag.
In June, Egypt’s former Interim President Adly Mansour issued a law imposing a jail term of up to one year and a fine with a maximum penalty of LE30,000 ($4,000) for insulting the flag.
