Employees of Hadeed, owned by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), recently conducted an extensive clean-up campaign on Jinnah Island, north of Jubail, clearing tons of land and marine waste, and construction debris from the island along its coast, and consecutively contributing to wildlife conservation on the island.

The campaign, held from 7 a.m. to 12 noon, was in line with SABIC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, which gives due importance to global and regional sustainability initiatives, such as waste free environmental initiatives launched by the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemicals Association (GPCA).

While conforming to the highest standards of safety, the campaign targeted the removal of huge piles of waste from the island, including boat remains, fishing nets, ropes entangled between rocks, wires, hoses, pipes, wood pieces, oars, plastic cans, bags, spent equipment, and plastic, metal and glass bottles. These waste materials had greatly distorted the landscape of the island, and threatened land and marine wildlife. The campaign also included cleaning and restoring some of the island’s facilities, such as constructing a pier and security fences for the benefit of boat users.

Sheikh Shareef Al-Khaldi, Jinnah Island’s station leader, praised this important initiative taken by the company, and expressed his happiness over it. He added that the campaign demonstrates SABIC’s commitment to support the community. He thanked the SABIC leaders, employees and all contributors to the campaign.

Jinnah Island in the Gulf is located 35 km north of Jubail, and south of Ras Al-Khair. It covers an area of 7 million square meters. Its importance is due to its potential as a major tourist destination, with its abundance of fresh water, its proximity to pearl diving spots, archaeology sites, rich marine wildlife, natural beauty and scenic landscapes, fresh air, and extensive flora and fauna, including birds like ostriches and flowers during spring.
