Unidentified gunmen shot and wounded a man south of the Egyptian city of Arish in the Sinai Peninsula early Friday, Egypt-based Aswat Masriya news website reported.

A 19-year-old man was shot at as he made his way down Arish airport road, police sources told the website which was launched by the Thompson Reuters Foundation.

Security forces said they were scanning the area for suspects.

The Egyptian army launched a wide security operation in Sinai last year following attacks by rogue insurgents on security forces following the 2013 ouster of former Islamist President Mohammad Mursi.
