Riyadh meet to focus on importance of Arabic
On behalf of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, Culture and Information Minister Abdul Aziz Al-Khodairy will open the 19th conference of Arab ministers of culture in Riyadh on Monday.
Al-Khodairy said delegates from more than 30 countries and organizations will take part in the four-day conference at Raval Kempinski Hotel.
The conference’s theme is: “Arabic language — a strong medium for cultural integration.”
“We have completed all preparations for the conference with the support of other government departments,” the minister said.
He thanked King Abdullah and Crown Prince Salman for their support for the event. “This reflects their continuous support for cultural affairs in the Kingdom and other Arab countries,” he said.
Abdullah Muharib, secretary-general of Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALESCO), said the conference will shed light on the comprehensive cultural strategy of member countries.
He emphasized the need to review the present state of Arab culture with a critical look in the light of modern developments.
“Arab officials understand the close relation between language and culture as language plays a significant role in enriching human culture. They consider the Arabic language as a fundamental factor in boosting Arab culture,” he said.
Muharib stressed the need to strengthen the Arabic language in order to confront the challenges posed by other languages.
“We should also work for developing the standard of Arab universities to play a greater role in creation of knowledge and scholars,” he said.
“We have to take care of the Arabic language for it to make greater contribution toward human civilization,” he added.
