The municipality of Wady Al-Dawasir closed down 12 shops for various violations during a surprise inspection tour on Monday.

“Shops selling produce and other food items were shut down due to violations of health standards,” said Ibrahim Al-Safi, the director of public relations at the municipality.

He said the inspection teams seized 187 kg of vegetables and fruits deemed unfit for human consumption.

Al-Safi said the teams also confiscated 327 bags of homemade tobacco, 211 bags of store-bought tobacco and 697 other kinds of tobacco of different flavors; 84 shisha pipes and 173 kg of ghee, cheese and butter of unknown sources.

In addition, 132 cartons of Fevadol tablets, 39 cans of zamzam water of unknown origins and 180 kg of rice were also seized from a warehouse due to the presence of cats.

All the shops were shuttered and the owners were referred to the municipality for fines and additional punitive action.
