More than 100,000 foreign workers were arrested in Jeddah in six months since the beginning of 1436H, Jeddah police announced on Sunday.

According to Jeddah police chief Maj. Gen. Masoud Al-Adwani, the security campaign, which was carried out by police in cooperation with a number of law enforcement agencies and the local labor office, resulted in the arrest of 100,045 violators of the work and residency systems in the province.

The campaign, which began during the month of Muharram and lasted until the end of Jumada Al-Thani, focused on the crackdown of violators of the residency and labor laws, he said, adding that the inspection campaigns targeted the places the violators frequented.

The campaigns, which were carried out under the directives of Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed, nabbed violators inside houses, in guesthouses and malls and on public streets.

The official said that those arrested were sent to detention centers before deportation.

Thanking the governor for his support, Al-Adwani also registered his appreciation to all government agencies and citizens who cooperated with the campaign.

He said the campaign will continue on a daily basis throughout the province. During operations, police cordon off targeted areas to block illegal workers from escaping.

As part of the campaign, security authorities conduct regular inspections to apprehend illegal workers to curb crimes such as thefts, sorcery, employing illegal workers, brewing liquor and preventing them from becoming involved in illgal activities.
