A 20-year-old Egyptian student committed suicide Saturday by jumping off Cairo Tower, Egypt-based Al Ahram reported citing police sources.

Initial investigations showed that the man, who was studying at the American University in Cairo, suffered psychological problems.

The victim, who was not named, jumped from the top of the 187-meter Cairo Tower and fell on its administrative building.

In 2012, the World Health Organization listed Egypt as among the countries with the lowest suicide rate, at less than five suicides per 100,000 people.

But since the act is widely seen sinful, both socially and religiously, suicide cases in Egypt are often registered as accidental deaths by relatives of the deceased.

Lack of accurate records makes genuine suicide rates in Egypt largely unknown.
