Major Gen. Ibrahim Al-Hmazi, director general of prisons, has ordered the formation of a committee led by Brig. Gen. Meshaal Al-Sbaiei, assistant director for operations, to investigate a video showing a group of prisoners taking what appears to be heroin injections in the Briman prison in Jeddah.

Al-Hmazi said that five prisoners appearing in the video were referred to King Fahd Hospital for a blood analysis, in coordination with Anti-Drug Association in Makkah.

He, however, said that two of the five prisoners appearing in the video were released several months ago and that the medical records of four of them indicate that they have diabetes and needed insulin shots.

Investigations will determine whether the substance being injected was a drug or insulin, he said.

Experts have suggested that heroin cannot be prepared through the method appearing in the video, said Al-Hmazi, adding that the truth will come out soon.

Meanwhile, users on social networking sites have created a hashtage #Heroin_in _Briman_Prison, with some suggesting the aim of the video is to insult some prison officials in Jeddah whose names were mentioned by prisoners in the video, while others argue that the government provides social and religious awareness and rehabilitation programs for the rehabilitation of the prisons’ population.

In this undated video posted on Youtube, inmates at the Briman prison in Jeddah are shown purportedly taking heroin injections. Two of the inmates were reportedly released months ago with the finding that they were diabetics and were only taking insulin shots. But as the video clip went viral on social media, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Al-Hmazi, director general of prisons, ordered an investigation to determine the real score.
