Egypt military ‘in full control’ of Sinai after clashes
Egypt’s military spokesman said Wednesday that the situation in North Sinai was back in control following clashes with militants that left more than 100 people dead.
Mohamed Sanir, who was speaking by phone to state television, said that the northern part of the peninsula was “100 percent under control,” according to Reuters news agency. Sanir’s statements came shortly after an ISIS-linked militant group struck Egyptian army outposts in the Sinai Peninsula in a coordinated wave of suicide bombings and battles that killed 17 soldiers and more than 100 militants. Wednesday’s fighting on more than 15 security sites was the deadliest in decades. It followed the assassination of Egypt’s chief prosecutor and a vow by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to step up the legal battle against Islamic militants. Militants in northern Sinai, which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip, stepped up their attacks following Islamist President Mohammad Mursi’s fall. |
