Campaign aims at closure of pro-Daesh accounts on Twitter
With extremist organizations including Daesh continuing to use social media like Twitter to rope in Saudi youths, the Ministry of Interior has tracked their accounts and blocked them.
At the same time, Saudis have continued their awareness campaign for almost three months against Daesh supporters on Twitter, according to a website.
On July 5, Saudi Twitterati decided to launch a campaign under hashtag #Hamlat_Jaish_Spam_AlDaesh or “campaign spam army of Daesh supporters” on Twitter to campaign against accounts of users who have links to this terrorist organization.
The campaign aims to send a message to Twitter about users who are spreading news, photos and video clips about Daesh. When the number of those who block these accounts increases, Twitter eventually closes these accounts.
Account @Fares444 is leading this campaign and has published visual explanations on how to send an awareness report to block accounts of Daesh supporters.
The campaign started after Daesh’s influence on Twitter was noticed, and the Saudi Ministry of Interior revealed Daesh supporters’ accounts.
In April, the ministry said that it had noticed activities of some accounts on social media. They are: Al Mujahid Al Hazali 2014, Abu Qatada Al Ansari, D. Classic, Abnaul Jazirah, Naji Al Harbi, Tayyar Al Siyasah, Muwahhid 9, Khalid, Umm Ateka. These accounts were involved in terror propaganda and are trying to lure children and youths to participate in terror activities. One of these accounts spread visual clips showing a nine-year-old participating in a bloody terrorist activity.
The Ministry of Interior said that these accounts attacked scholars of the Kingdom and spread misleading information about them. These accounts have also threatened to target government offices and residential complexes and start operations to foment communal tension and target security personnel.
The Ministry of Interior said that it has arrested a Saudi in Al-Qassim who confessed to his participation on social media in spreading information and details of how to make explosives and urging people to participate in terrorist activities through the IDs: ABOS ALEH-15, ABIB2007, ABIB2015, ABIB2001, ABIB2008, and ABIB 2009.
