The Saudi Environmental Society (SENS) is keen to provide the best solutions in working toward a more sustainable environment in the Kingdom.

As a reflection of this, the organization is now planning the largest sustainable environmental forum in the Kingdom and in the Gulf, which is expected to involve the participation of thousands of experts and 20 ministers. The forum is to be held this month.

The four-day forum and workshop designed for women and children will be inaugurated by Princess Lolowah bint Faisal Al-Saud, vice chairperson of the Board of Trustees, and general supervisor of Effat University.

The environmental event will be organized by the Saudi Environmental Society in strategic partnership with the United Nations and the World Health Organization, with the aim of advancing national environmental awareness.

Majda Abu Ras, deputy chairperson of SENS, said that this year the focus of the forum will be the participation of women and children in the program, and that the experts in attendance will discuss environmental sustainable development programs and various environmental concepts with there guests. Additionally, decision makers from both inside and outside of the Kingdom will seek to increase awareness about environmentally friendly programs in Saudi society. She further said that, as women are main part of society and are often the decision makers in families, they are the most important educators in the home; thus, it is very important that they are involved in the environmental awareness program and are able to instill environmental education in their family and children at a young, formative age.

The workshop also includes 50 discussion panels about environmental protection under the slogan “Be’aty: Green Flag, Green Country”.

The sessions discuss green home design, decor and furnishings, green technology through the application of reuse and recycling of household items, water and energy use efficiency, children’s health, first aid for the public, as well as eco-friendly furniture and products, insecticides, plants and sustainable consumption patterns. The workshop also emphasizes the importance of women’s relationship with the environment in terms of the necessity of women’s participation in the development process and their particular responsibilities and tasks in relation to economic and social development.

Ras also noted that studies and research indicate that women play an important role in preserving the environment through the upbringing of their children, and the way in which they have the ability to instill positive behavior early on.
