The traffic department in the capital launched a campaign against badly maintained automobiles as part of its drive to limit accidents and control pollution, and seized 1,915 vehicles.

The department said that 1,015 vehicles were seized for not being maintained and over 900 cars confiscated for either obliterated or no number plates.

The men in charge will monitor traffic violations in order to raise traffic sense and address excesses threatening road safety, which also includes those tampering with number plates to dodge Saher cameras.

The department confirmed that the campaign will continue and penalties will be levied on violators and offenders.

The campaign is also targeting those using mobile phones while driving as one of the measures to prevent accidents. The traffic department is closely monitoring all these violations, including jumping of red lights, non-use of seat belts, wrong parking.

According to a Saudi company that handles traffic accidents, cell phone use while driving is among the top five of 90 percent of traffic accidents in the country, besides jumping of red lights.
