A 63-year-old Saudi man has died of MERS-CoV in Manila, Philippine Health Secretary Janette Garin announced on Saturday.

The Saudi national — who had a cough, fever and occasional chills — died on Tuesday in an undisclosed hospital after a two-day confinement, Garin said. He arrived in the Philippine on Sept. 17.

The patient’s X-ray results “suggested” MERS infection, Garin said, without providing other details.

Twelve health workers who had contact with the patient were isolated in government hospitals after they developed MERS symptoms, but as of Saturday, they have tested negative for infection, she said.

“We urge the public to be vigilant to ensure that MERS-CoV has a limited presence in our country,” she said.

She added: “What is important is to report to the nearest hospital if you experience flu-like symptoms and a history of travel to the Arabian peninsula or possible exposure to a MERS-CoV infected patient.”

Before the new suspected case, the Philippines this year confirmed two MERS cases — a 36-year-old man from the Middle East, whose nationality was not disclosed, and a Filipino nurse who returned to the country from Saudi Arabia.

Foreign Assistant Secretary and DFA spokesperson Charles Jose, meanhile, confirmed that a Filipino nurse in Jeddah, infected with the virus, was “showing signs of recovery.”

He said: “She’s now breathing on her own and was unhooked from the mechanical ventilator a few days ago.”
