The giant crane that crashed into the Grand Mosque on Friday, crushing 111 people to death and leaving over 200 injured.

The Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution has begun questioning nine operators and engineers of the Saudi Binladin Group to determine the cause of the Haram accident which resulted in 111 deaths.

After inspecting the site, the bureau announced that it had begun reviewing all relevant documents, maintenance contracts, and safety procedures pertaining to the project. A team consisting of a number of experienced investigators has been formed within the bureau for a probe.

The body will file a lawsuit. Up till now, no lawsuit has been brought to court due to a lack of evidence.

The investigating team is working closely with security authorities in order to better understand the accident. It is also using relevant video footage along with reports submitted by the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment and the Civil Defense.

Sources said that the bureau would likely ban the nine engineers and operators from leaving the Kingdom as a precautionary measure.

They added that all investigations will be transparent and exhaustive. Should any evidence emerge that proves the fault of any party, an indictment will be issued and the party accused will be referred to the Criminal Court, according to sources quoted by the local media.

Possible charges could include worksite neglect, manslaughter and the destruction of property.
