906 arrested on terror charges in 4 months
As many as 906 Saudis have been arrested on terror charges during the last four months in the Kingdom, although the arrests during the last four years include people of various nationalities.
Foreigners have come under greater focus following the the recent arrest of a Filipino runaway woman along with a Syrian bomb maker from Riyadh.
A recent report of the Ministry of Interior showed the existence of 4,777 detainees in Al-Mabahith (intelligence) prisons since the last four years, of which there are 23 prisoners with unknown identities and four are still awaiting trial.
In addition, one prisoner has already been convicted and investigations are ongoing against three others.
The report said that one of the prisoners entered the country with fake documents and his case is being considered by the judicial authorities.
The ministry, revealing the nationalities of some of the detainees, said there is one prisoner each from Trinidad and Tobago, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Algeria, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and China.
Prisoners of Yemeni nationality account for majority foreigners with 306 detainees. Second on the list come the Syrian detainees with 135, including the latest arrest of the bomb maker from Riyadh, followed by Pakistanis with 43, of which 14 have been convicted, 11 under appeal, 10 being considered by the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution, and investigations are under way against 17.
A total of 35 detainees are Egyptians, of which five have been convicted, two under appeal, four to be referred to the prosecution and enforcement authorities and the roles of 18 are being investigated.
The ministry also revealed other nationalities involved in terror activities, including six Sudanese, 13 Indians, 23 Chadians, two Eritreans, 15 Jordanians, four Palestinians, three Somalis, nine Ethiopians, two Emiratis (one is already convicted the other detained), 11 Bahrainis and seven Iraqis.
The security forces arrested, during the past three months, two Filipinos, one of whom is under investigation while the other is waiting to be referred to the Public Prosecution.
The list of suspects detained also includes an American (arrested around seven months ago), two Qataris, three of Libyan, French and British nationality, two Russians and two Algerians. The procedures against all these cases are yet to be completed for being referred to the prosecution and enforcement authorities.
