Two people were killed and two others injured Tuesday when a man opened fire with a machine gun on people at a branch of a well-known local bank.

The police received a report at 11 a.m. on Tuesday that a man had tried to rob the branch of the Al-Rajhi Bank. He opened fire at employees and customers, resulting in the fatalities and injuries, the Jazan police said.

The bank was surrounded by the police, with officers calling for the man to surrender, but he opened fire at them also. However, they managed to arrest him and freed those he had kept hostage.

Jazan Gov. Mohammad bin Nasser bin Abdulaziz has expressed his concern over the incident. According to reports, the armed man had entered the bank shouting “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.” A survivor was quoted as saying that bank employees had helped customers leave through an emergency door.

One report claimed that the man had ordered workers to leave and then started firing his weapon.

Security force officers had freed 10 women employees of the bank before capturing the man, the report stated.
