A Saudi man who had just completed the Haj and become a father earlier this year was one of the two people killed in a failed attempt to rob a bank in Jazan on Tuesday.

Abdullah Kinani has left behind a four-month-old daughter and wife, according to his brother Anwar, a local publication reported Wednesday. Anwar said Abdullah went to meet a former colleague at the bank when he was killed.

“He went to the Jazan branch of Al-Rajhi bank to greet a former colleague with whom he had worked for years,” he said. Abdullah had left the bank to work for the Health Ministry, he said.

Anwar said that he learned late in the afternoon that his brother had been killed. “They only identified the body when we went to the hospital because my brother left all his identification papers with me before going to the bank to meet his friend.”

He said his family is still in shock after learning about his tragic death. His mother-in-law had been trying to reach him all day on Tuesday, he said. Abdullah’s body is being kept at the local morgue until investigations into the incident are completed, he said.

Two other people were injured when the armed robber opened fire with a machine gun on people at the branch of the well-known local bank. The police received a report at 11 a.m. on Tuesday about the attempted robbery.

The bank was surrounded by the police, with officers calling for the man to surrender, but he opened fire on them also. However, they managed to arrest him and freed those he had kept hostage, police said Tuesday.

According to reports, the armed man had entered the bank shouting “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.” A survivor was quoted as saying that bank employees had helped customers leave through an emergency door.

One report claimed that the man had ordered workers to leave and then started firing his weapon. Security force officers had freed 10 women employees of the bank before capturing the man, the report stated.
