Libyan cabinet to be announced ‘within hours’
U.N. special envoy to Libya Bernardino Leon said during the early hours on Thursday he expects the formation of the Libyan cabinet to be officially announced within the upcoming hours.
Leon, however, added that he has not yet received the names of candidates for the government from the expired national congress.
The special envoy also said that a Libyan government will be formed without amending the Skhirat agreement.
The envoy also said that the delegation of the expired national congress requested two amendments to the final agreement, adding that the request was turned down because the agreement which the rival parties reached few days ago is final.
Another reason behind the amendments request might be due to the international community’s requests forming the unity government without amending the agreement.
Leon had intensified his efforts in Sikhrat, south of the Moroccan capital Rabat, as he met with representatives of different Libyan parties in an attempt to reach an agreement to form a national unity government.
Since last year, Tripoli has been controlled by Libya Dawn, an alliance of Islamist-leaning former militias and a powerful armed faction from the city of Misrata that set up a self-declared government and parliament in the capital.
The internationally recognized government and elected parliament has worked out of the east of the country since its armed allies were driven out of the capital, which is in the northwest.
