Nazaha reveals pressure to disclose names involved in corruption cases
The National Anti-Corruption Commission (Nazaha) has revealed that it is facing strong pressure from the public as well as from the media to publicly name people convicted of corruption activities.
Due to this, the commission has recently suggested the allocation of judicial departments to look into corruption cases further in order to speed up rulings, as delayed rulings have led to a rise in this negative pressure from the public against the commission.
The group pointed out that such delays lead to the launching of complaints from citizens, as well as the spreading of rumors in the community and on social media websites, saying that the commission isn’t serious about fighting corruption or holding those responsible to account for their conduct.
Nazaha recently announced that orders were issued to the commission granting it the right to announce the details of completed cases that have already been referred to special investigation bodies, in addition to the possibility of announcing any notifications it receives following the laying of all charges upon the accused. This said, the commission remains unable to announce the names of the accused at this time — something which can only be announced following the full judicial ruling in many cases.
The commission used this occasion to point out that the announcement of the details of corruption cases that are settled through the use of solid evidence can often prompt the deterrence of others who may be thinking of committing similar acts, thus decreasing corruption cases over time.
Nazaha has subsequently emphasized the importance of speeding up rulings in corruption cases by implementing structures within the national strategy that protect the integrity of all involved actors — including the commission — and which also fight corruption in order to deter other people from committing similar crimes.
