The Indonesian Consulate has promised to determine the authenticity of a video circulating on social media allegedly showing a Saudi man sexually harassing a maid in his kitchen.

The 32-second video was reportedly taken by the Saudi man’s wife, who suspected him of cheating on her. The woman being harassed appears to be the Saudi family’s Indonesian maid, who is seen in the video resisting the man’s advances.

Indonesian Consul Dicouince said the consulate has not received any complaint from the maid who appeared in the video. An investigation was underway, he was quoted as saying by a local publication recently.

“If the incident proves to be true, it is totally unacceptable and represents a stark violation of human rights.” He said that he would meet with the maid to determine the facts, and then deal with it accordingly.

Fadli Ahmed, the deputy consul, said that if the harassment did take place then he was confident the Kingdom’s government would deal with it in terms of Islamic law.

Fahd Mahbob, a lawyer, said there could be punishment for the person who took the video and posted it online. This could mean either a fine of SR500,000 or one year in jail, or both. The publisher of the video faces a fine of SR3 million and six years in prison.

He said cases of cybercrime, involving people filming others without their knowledge, are handled by the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution.

May Basnawi, a psychologist and social and family expert, said it would have been better for the people involved not to have circulated the video because it was, in her view, a “family scandal.”

“Even if the wife had filmed her husband because she was under psychological pressure, she had no right to expose him like this,” said Basnawi.
