Activists on Twitter have launched an organized campaign to close down all accounts that are accused of promoting Daesh-related ideologies. The campaign, which included prominent Saudi personalities, was able to close down hundreds of accounts belonging to Daesh and its supporters recently.

Activist Sultan Al-Harithi said that the campaign closed down more than 300 accounts that were deemed to be promoting the terror organization.

The campaign, entitled “The Spamming National Campaign.” informed Twitter management of the users who were using the site to promote deviant ideologies through the news and video clips that they had posted on the website. These posts often also included direct threats to prominent Saudi and international figures, providing even greater impetus for the activists to continue their work with the campaign. Following the reporting process, the account is suspended by management, before it is officially shut if the accusation is proved correct.

Earlier, the Saudi Ministry of Interior also embarked on programs to close threatening accounts on Twitter which sought to attract young fighters to the organization. The Ministry said that the accounts that they shut down attacked the Kingdom’s scholars, targeted youths and security officers, heralded the bombings of government buildings and residential complexes and promoted sectarian incitement.

Social media expert, Amar Mohammad, said that Daesh has recruited many people through social media in the Kingdom as well as in other Arab countries.
