80% of Gulf engineers are expats
A whopping 80 percent of the engineers working in the Gulf countries are foreigners.
“We are currently working to scrutinize the degrees and discovering widespread fraud by the professional accreditation system which has been implemented in some of the countries of the region. With this we are making efforts to confirm the capabilities of the foreign engineers and support local Gulf engineers,” said Kamal Al-Hamad, secretary-general of the Gulf Engineering Association.
He was speaking at a forum held in Dubai to discuss various engineering and legal issues of contracts and big projects in the Gulf where total investments have reached $3 billion.
The concluding session was held on Thursday with participation from the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, said Hussein Al-Fadhli, secretary of the Saudi Council of Engineers.
Majid Qaroob, chairman of the Saudi Law Center, emphasized the need to create a system to legally manage huge projects in the Gulf to guard them from any obstruction and support developmental projects and engineering arbitration to create trust and stability in projects through fair and swift economic measures.
Mohammad Al-Qahtani, legal adviser of the Integrated Development Center of the Makkah Secretariat, expressed concern about the university syllabus, which he said did not meet the requirements of the huge projects from all engineering, legal and technical aspects.
