Jacky Sutton was also acting Iraq director for the Institute for War and Peace Reporting

Former BBC journalist, Jacky Sutton, was found dead in a lavatory at the city’s main airport. The circumstances surrounding the cause of her death still remains unknown, according to the BBC.

It is understood by the BBC that she has been traveling to Irbil, northern Iraq.

Jacky, acting Iraq director for the London-based Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), arrived to Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport and had a two-hour wait for a connection flight that she missed as reported by BBC correspondent Ben Ando.

“Local media are reporting that she didn’t have enough money to purchase a replacement ticket and then she was found dead in the toilets a couple of hours later. What exactly happened though is not known,” he said.

She had been studying for a PhD at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Australian National University with research focus on international development support to female media professionals in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2003 and 2013.

Prof Amin Saikal, Centre director, told the BBC they were “deeply saddened and shocked by the tragedy of losing one of its brilliant PhD students”.
