Wage delay: Small firms to face the music from February 1

Business establishments employing less than 100 workers and a minimum of 11 will come under the purview of the wage protection system (WPS) from February next year, and will be fined for delaying salaries and their employees will be allowed to change sponsorship.

Abdullah Abu Ethnain, undersecretary of the ministry for inspection and work environment development, on Saturday said that stages from 10 to 16 of the WPS will be applied for facilities with less than 100 workers and not less than 11, and the defaulting firms will be subjected to fines starting Feb. 1, 2016, while fines will start for those employing between 80 and 99 workers from Feb. 10, 2016, SPA reported.

“The 16th stage of the program will be applied on Sept. 1, 2017 for facilities with 14 to 11 workers. A decision on establishments with less than 11 workers will be taken at a later date,” he said.

“The ministry is committed to applying the system on all the facilities in the private sector to ensure payment of wages on time, determine wage levels of all professions and reduce problems between employers and employees,” he said.

“The ministry will stop its services to the employers who are not committed to WPS and who do not provide their employees wage data. Employees of the offending establishments will be allowed to transfer their sponsorship without approval of the current employer,” he added.
