A suspected Al-Qaeda suicide bomber killed two militiamen on Monday at a checkpoint in the southern Yemeni city of Aden, already beset by violence, a security source said.

The bomber approached the militiamen as they were inspecting cars at a large intersection in the Mansoura district and detonated an explosive vest, killing the guards and himself, the source said.

Aden is the nominal seat of Yemen’s embattled government, which Gulf countries launched a military intervention to protect against the Iran-allied Houthi group in late March.

Meanwhile, radical gunmen have threatened to use force against university students in Aden if they do not observe segregation of the sexes on campus, witnesses said.

Students said armed militants distributed leaflets containing the threats and signed by Daesh in at least three departments of the university of Aden. The leaflets also banned music and demanded that students perform collective prayers on campus, they added. They set a Thursday deadline for the demands to be met. Otherwise they threatened to carry out car bomb and petrol bomb attacks.

The authenticity of the leaflets signed by the Aden and Abyan branch of Daesh could not be immediately verified.
