1,039 women to contest civic election
A total of 1,039 women are standing as candidates in the upcoming municipal council elections.
They will compete in 212 or 75 percent of the 284 municipal councils, said Jadee Al-Qahtani, head of the Municipal Elections Executive Committee. Several women nominated themselves.
Their participation are indicative of their desire to serve their communities. Councils are important because their functions affect the daily lives of citizens, Al-Qahtani said.
He said that the municipalities have to identify the needs of citizens by listening to their views about services. This was one of the core functions of municipal councils.
The elections would help see qualified citizens take up important positions so that they can serve their communities. Al-Qahtani said that the body has resolved several challenges experienced during the last two elections, with a new set of regulations.
